Foreign entrepreneurs wishing to invest in Morocco must first make sure that they have registered their trademark in the Kingdom, so that they can fully enjoy the tools recognized by the Moroccan legal system for the protection of intellectual property. That said, Morocco is party to the Madrid agreement and the related protocol on the international registration of trademarks and, consequently, the registration (or extension of one's trademark) on the Moroccan territory will take place according to the usual rules codified at international level. The period of validity of a trademark is 10 years, starting from the date of the application, renewable for similar indefinite periods. Before registering your trademark, it is however advisable to carry out not only a prior search on the existence, or not, of an identical - or similar - trademark already registered in Morocco, but, at the same time, also an accurate study on the transliteration into Arabic of the trademark to be registered. In fact, it could happen that a trademark considered to be of particular appeal in its own language could take on a completely different meaning if reported slavishly in Arabic. Finally, before starting your business in Morocco, it is also advisable to register the appropriate domain name of your brand / company with the “but” extension.
